Calculate Lawn Size With Google Maps for a Mowing Quote

Convert an area measurement from Google My Maps into mowable square feet, then estimate mowing time and labor cost with editable assumptions.

Measure the property as a closed shape in Google My Maps, then turn that area into mowable square feet. The calculator uses your exclusions, mowing productivity and labor planning cost, so its result is a transparent estimate rather than a promised production rate.

Turn a map measurement into mowable lawn size

Enter the area from your map, subtract the share covered by hardscape and beds, then use your own mowing rate and labor cost for planning.

Use the unit shown with the closed shape on your map.
Estimate the non-mowable share inside the measured outline.
Use a rate from your own mower, terrain and crew history.
Use your own loaded labor cost, not a promised market rate.

Calculated result

Mowable lawn area
8,712 sq ft
Estimated mowing time
0.73 hours

About 44 minutes

Labor planning cost
$32.67

Area: 10,890.00 sq ft × (1 - 20 ÷ 100) = 8,712.00 sq ft.

Time: 8,712.00 sq ft ÷ 12,000 sq ft/hour = 0.726 hours.

Labor: 0.726 hours × $45.00/hour = $32.67.

Use this planning area in the mowing price calculator, then save the resulting per-property price with the estimate and recurring work.

Measure the property outline in Google My Maps

  1. On a computer, open or create a map in Google My Maps and find the property.
  2. Choose Measure distances and areas, click each corner or bend around the property, then close the shape.
  3. Copy the area and its unit into the calculator above.

Google's My Maps help page documents the closed-shape area tool. Use the aerial outline as a planning estimate, not a property survey.

Subtract the parts a mower will not cover

The map outline usually includes the house, driveway, patios, beds and other hardscape. Estimate their combined share of the outlined area and enter it as a percentage. At 100 percent excluded, the mowable area, mowing time and labor planning cost correctly fall to zero.

Use the area, time and labor formulas

The calculator converts the mapped area to square feet, then applies these formulas:

  • Mowable square feet = mapped square feet × (1 - excluded percentage ÷ 100).
  • Mowing hours = mowable square feet ÷ your mowing productivity in square feet per hour.
  • Labor planning cost = mowing hours × your hourly labor planning cost.

The acre conversion uses the NIST definition of 43,560 square feet per acre. The productivity and labor fields are editable assumptions because mower width, terrain, obstacles and crew setup differ from one operation to another.

Turn the measurement into a property price

Area and labor are inputs, not a complete customer price. Take the mowable square feet and time estimate to the lawn mowing price calculator, where you can compare them with your minimum stop, travel and extras. Then start free in TurfPlanner and keep the resulting price with the estimate, recurring schedule and invoice for that property.

Common questions

Can Google Maps measure lawn size?
Google My Maps can show the area of a closed shape. Trace the property boundary, close the shape, then enter the displayed area and unit in this calculator.
Should I use the whole property area as the lawn area?
No. Subtract the estimated share covered by the house, driveway, patios, beds and other non-mowable surfaces inside the outline.
Is a map measurement accurate enough for a mowing quote?
Use it as a planning estimate, then confirm unusual boundaries, heavy tree cover and other unclear areas at the property before finalizing a quote. It is not a boundary survey.
